How Claret Jug Trophies Came Into Being

The Claret Jug is a coveted trophy given to the champion winner of the Open Championship. In addition known as the Golf Champion Trophy, this particular trophy is among the most coveted and revered trophies in the United Kingdom. In the US, this Open Championship is known as the British Open. Claret Jug trophies tend to be perceived as the peak of achievement for any golfer.

The darker red wine claret coloring is often referred to as being elite. The history of Claret Jug trophies dates back to 1872. This famous trophy is given each year to the champion of the Open golf tournament. The authentic trophy is kept and a replica is handed over to the winner with his name engraved. Whenever we speak of Claret Jug trophies, their background and source, the tale is unfinished without the mention of the young and gifted golf icon Tom Morris. He was generally known as Young Tom Morris because his father, Sr. Tom Morris or Old Tom Morris, performed as a partner.

Because of junior Tom Morris earning the Championship Belt 3 times consecutively there was the need of a brand new trophy to recognize this particular world champion for his success. The Challenge Belt was crafted from rich Moroccan leather adorned with emblems and ornate silver buckles making it a priceless win. The belt was awarded to the champion only for three wins in a row.

Once Tom Morris Junior won 3 times in a row, he became the owner of this special belt. On his subsequent win in 1872 the 3 clubs, specifically Prestwick, the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, as well as the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, donated ten pounds for a new trophy instead of an additional belt. This brand new trophy was known as The Golf Champion Trophy. When Young Tom Morris proceeded the following year to win the championship yet again for the 4th time, the trophy wasn't yet ready to be handed over to him, and so he was offered a medal as an alternative. While his was the very first name to become etched on the trophy, the very first Claret Jug Trophy was first awarded to Tom Kidd, the 1873 winner. This trophy was created by Mackay Cunningham and Company of Edinburgh and had 1873 imprinted on it.

The respected Claret Jug Trophy showed up twice for a memorial on five pound Scottish banknotes which were issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland. The first was in 2004 when the illustrious Royal and Ancient Golf Club of Scotland recognized its 250th anniversary and the next time was in 2005, using Jack Nicklaus, the "golden bear" of US golf holding the Jug like a symbol to seal his retirement.

Since 1928, the original Claret Jug Trophy has been displayed at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club located in St Andrews, Scotland.
