You Can To Dunk A Basketball
Before We Start
Before an average player should start thinking about dunking, he needs to assess where he is at and be realistic. A player's height and his athletic abilities are the two main factors that will determine if he will ever be able to dunk a basketball. Not to say that it is not possible, but there are not many 5-6 players that will ever be able to jump high enough to dunk. In fact, an average sized person will have to have above-average abilities in order to be able to dunk. Be rational with yourself. At the same time, don't limit how high you can jump before you even begin. Many people have made amazing gains in their vertical jump. It takes hard work, but you can reap the rewards.
Things that should be evaluated before starting:
1.) Is lack of height a problem? This won't change. You CAN learn to jump higher, but you still might never be able to dunk. But, that is alright! Develop other aspects of your game.
2.) Are you carrying too much weight? By carrying more weight than you should, you are limiting yourself right from the start.
3.) How athletic are you in general? Some players just have the "gift" of being able to jump. You can develop it as well, but know where you are starting from. Get a measurement of your vertical jump before you begin. This will show how you are advancing.
4.) What kind of shape are you in? Jumping utilizes muscles from the whole body. Having just muscular legs alone is not enough.
Let's Get Started
Begin by getting in the best overall shape you can be. This includes all other body parts as well as your legs. To ensure you can reach your ultimate jumping potential, you need to be in good overall shape. You use every part of your body while performing a jump, so it stands to reason that your entire body should be in shape. While this part of the process isn't glamorous, it needs to be done. A strong foundation is needed for the best results. Start with this and you will be rewarded down the road.
